Ask a Question

Synopsis
  • This resource includes an interactive map and graph that shows the cumulative installed capacity of onshore and offshore wind energy for countries around the world since 1997.
  • Data source: BP Statistical Review of World Energy.
Teaching Tips

Positives

  • Students can customize the map and graph to display one or more countries of interest and compare them with the global total.
  • The data table, maps, and charts can be downloaded. The data table can also be sorted.

Additional Prerequisites

  • Students should be familiar with line graphs, global maps, and data tables.

Differentiation

  • Cross-curricular connections could be made with math, economics, and social studies courses when working with the data. Students could also discuss the economic and societal benefits of building and using renewable energy. Building wind turbines creates jobs, reduces toxic air pollution, and slows down global warming.
Scientist Notes

Method used in this resource entailed obtaining the cumulative installed wind energy capacity, including both onshore and offshore wind sources, measured in Gigawatts (GW). China appeared to have the most installed wind energy facility as compared to the USA and other countries. This resource is recommended for teaching.

Standards
  • Science and Engineering
    • ESS3: Earth and Human Activity
      • HS-ESS3-2 Evaluate competing design solutions for developing, managing, and utilizing energy and mineral resources based on cost-benefit ratios.
      • HS-ESS3-4 Evaluate or refine a technological solution that reduces impacts of human activities on natural systems.
  • Social Studies
    • Geography
      • Geography 1 (F1): Students understand the geography of the community, Maine, the United States, and various regions of the world, and geographic influences on life in the past, present, and future by using the geographic grid and a variety of types of maps, including digital sources, to locate and access relevant geographic information that reflects multiple perspectives.
      • Geography 1 (D3): Students understand the geography of the United States and various regions of the world and the effect of geographic influences on decisions about the present and future by describing the major regions of the Earth and their major physical, environmental, and cultural features using a variety of geographic tools, including digital tools and resources.
