Global Fossil Fuel Consumption

|
Ask a Question

Synopsis
  • This resource includes an interactive map and graphs that show global primary energy consumption by fossil fuel source, measured in Terawatt-hours.
  • This dataset includes primary energy data using two methodologies:
    • "Direct" primary energy, which does not take account of the inefficiencies in fossil fuel production.
    • "Substitution" primary energy, which does take account of inefficiencies in fossil fuel production.
Teaching Tips

Positives

  • The interactive provides three different ways for students to explore data (chart, map, table).
  • Related research and data are linked.
  • The site explains how the data was collected.
Additional Prerequisites
  • Learners need to be familiar with the different sources of electricity.
  • Educator would need time to get familiar with this interactive media and decide on how to implement it with the learners.
Differentiation
  • There are other related interactive maps for other sources of energy.
  • Can be used to create awareness about one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Scientist Notes

Fossil fuel consumption is shown to be increasing from 1985-2020 globally. This resource is recommended for students to explore the rate of consumption of energy from nonrenewable energy sources.
