Fisheries Unit Labs

• The eight labs in this module on fisheries presents fisheries research and management tools and allows students to become active participants in both learning about and conserving marine ecosystems.
• They discuss types of fishing, overfishing, ecosystem effects, food waste, global fish populations, aquaculture, pollution from fish farms, and climate connections.

•  Review teacher resources for general background information relevant to each lab and materials that you may need to gather.
• Most labs require access to the Internet.
  

Differentiation

• Science classes can connect one or more of these labs to eutrophication, dead zones, and nutrient cycling.
• Social studies classes can discuss the ethics of fishing a species to extinction or causing populations to crash and think critically about how humans have been able to affect global populations and global systems in a very short period of time.
• Have students brainstorm ways to reduce overfishing, pollution from fish farms, and protect marine ecosystems.
