Synopsis
- In this lesson, students listen to a read-aloud about where food comes from and draw a portrait of someone who helps prepare food in their community.
- Students will learn how many people contribute to the food that they eat.
Teaching Materials

Additional Prerequisites
- Teachers will need a copy of either Before We Eat: From Farm to Table by Pat Brisson or Zora's Zucchini by Katherine Pryor.
- Teachers must also provide paper, crayons (or Tempra paints), pencils, and black washable markers.
Differentiation
- Teachers can invite parents or community members who have a role in producing or preparing food to come and share about their jobs.
- If community members don't have the time to fit a visit in their schedules they can record a short message about their role in food production.
- Students can go on a mini field trip to the cafeteria kitchen and meet with cafeteria staff to learn how their school meals are prepared.
- Student portraits can be displayed in the classroom, hallways, or cafeteria.
- This lesson is designed for kindergarteners. To modify this lesson for first or second grade, students can write a sentence or multiple sentences explaining who their portrait is of and what their role is in food preparation.
- Older students can discuss food insecurity or how climate impacts the food we grow.
In this activity, students will begin to learn about where the food we eat comes from and how the community is an important piece of the food supply. This resource is recommended for teaching.
