Synopsis
- In this lesson, students will explore Mumbai and connect it to Sustainable Development Goal 1, No Poverty.
- Students will learn the definition of poverty, basic human needs, and ways that communities can help people experiencing poverty.
Teaching Materials
Positives
- Students will love the opportunity to play a related mobile game to enhance learning or try to play an outside game, such as baseball or cricket.
- There is a worksheet and additional presentation about sharing resources linked in the Activity Ideas section.
Prerequisites
- They suggest using the Earth Cubs app to explore Mumbai, however it is only available for mobile phones and requires an email to register. This app is not required, as students can use any book, map, or search engine for this investigation step.
- This topic may be uncomfortable for students experiencing poverty or homelessness. Teachers should be respectful of students' situations and comfort.
Differentiation & Implementation
- The lesson references the UN Sustainable Development Goal, No Poverty. If students are unfamiliar with the Sustainable Development Goals, teachers can use the lesson UN Sustainable Development Goals and Graphics.
- Students can discuss how climate change is connected to poverty. Teachers can lead a discussion about some climate change impacts, such as increased intensity and frequency of heat waves, droughts, flooding, and others, and think about how those experiencing poverty are impacted more intensely than others. Students can then brainstorm ways their community can help those in poverty stay safe.
- Students can discuss the importance of education and what things may prevent kids from getting to school. This can also lead to a lesson about girls' education and gender equality. Students can watch the video Gender Equality: SDG 5 to learn more about this topic and the related Sustainable Development Goal.
This resource teaches students about the connection between the UN SDGs and children's rights, as well as how they may raise their voices for a better future and help accomplish the SDGs. We suggest this resource for teaching because it has passed our science review.
