- This group of resources from Climate Generation introduces students to green careers and guides them in an exploration of these careers.
- Students can watch a 19-minute documentary explore climate solutions, create a community sustainability project that relates to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, perform an energy efficiency audit, and research and implement strategies to reduce food waste at school.
- The curriculum also has a linked lesson to introduce students to climate change, which includes a carbon cycle game where students model the cycle pre- and post-industrial revolution and participate in a data analysis activity.
- Some of the resources are based on Minnesota-specific information, but students from all states can benefit from this resource.
Teaching Materials
Positives
- This content introduces students to a wide range of careers and also opens their eyes to the idea that they can find and practice green strategies in any career and with any educational background.
- Students will engage in a variety of hands-on activities that will help them develop 21st century skills they can apply to any future career path.
Prerequisites
- Teachers will need to add the curriculum to the cart, create an account, and check out. Teachers will not be asked to provide payment information.
- Students should understand climate change. If students are unfamiliar with climate change, there is a background lesson available in Appendix A of this resource.
- In the first Career Exploration, students will need to enter an email to read the National Geographic article.
- For Career Exploration 3, the Solutions U page is no longer part of Solutions Journalism. Students can find articles using the Solutions Story Tracker.
- Teachers should note that Career Exploration 4 requires students to explore the community in a field trip, outside of class, or for a period of several weeks or months. Additionally, the Youth Action Ideas link for this Career Exploration is broken.
- The first video in the worksheet for Career Exploration 5 doesn't take you directly to the video, which can be found HERE. The second link is for an article, not a video. Teachers should explain this to students to avoid confusion.
- Students will need Kill A Watt Meters for Career Exploration 7.
Differentiation & Implementation
- The resource has a list of options for implementation, depending on class time constraints and curriculum needs, on page 12 of the PDF or X on the document.
- Many of the Career Exploration tasks require students to look up unknown words in a dictionary. Students may need a teacher demonstration, especially if they will be required to use physical dictionaries.
- Language arts teachers can focus on Career Exploration 1 or 3, which are exercises in summarization, language acquisition, and assessing the validity of a source.
- Economics classes can also focus on Career Exploration 1 to discuss the use of cap-and-trade programs and carbon offsets. If studying personal economics, students may also benefit from the solar panels activity in Career Exploration 5.
- Social studies classes can focus on Career Exploration 4, where they are taking data, interacting with GIS, and making connections between infrastructure, solutions, and environmental justice.
- Science classes can focus on Career Exploration 7, where students are participating in and collecting data for an energy audit.
This resource introduces students to several green careers, all with a focus on addressing climate change. Eight personal accounts are provided that address career requirements and the very real difference being made by each. The video is very inclusive, showing the many pathways across all education levels to green careers. This resource is recommended for teaching.
