Synopsis
- In this 5-lesson unit from the Global Schools Program, students will understand their place in the local and global community.
- Students will create a book highlighting the things that make them who they are, discuss community values, determine where their resources are imported from, analyze global statistics, and present their learning in a student-written play.

Positives
- Students will love getting to demonstrate their learning in something as creative as a play.
- These lessons do a great job of showing students just how interconnected the world is and their place in it.
Prerequisites
- The link for Learning Area 1 in the first lesson takes users to a different website for school garden resources. Additionally, many of the links to resources in Lesson 2 are broken. Teachers will need to find their own images of the impact of waste on the environment.
- Teachers may need to create their own template for the student books in Lesson 1, as there isn't a template provided.
- Students should have some familiarity with percentages.
Differentiation & Implementation
- In Lesson 1, teachers and students can work together to create prompts for their books. These can include questions about their family, what they like to do, things they enjoy, what they look like, and what is important to them.
- In the Lesson 2 activity, some students may benefit from using paper and a pencil to draw a blueprint or sketch of their idea. It may also benefit students to have a list of problems that a plastic bottle could solve. For example, something to put my colored pencils in, a place to grow my plant, or something to decorate my room with.
- When watching the video in Lesson 4, students may benefit from having the teacher read the text on the screen, especially for students who are still working towards automaticity with reading.
