Synopsis
- In this 5-lesson unit from the Global Schools Program, students will explore diversity and unity in global and local communities.
- Students will analyze pictures that represent the diversity of homes all over the world, interview a classmate, and collect data about the diversity and values of the students in the classroom.

Prerequisites

- Some students may need explicit instruction on how to actively listen. Teachers may want to model what this looks like.
Differentiation & Implementation
- Teachers can use these lessons at the beginning of the school year to foster a culture of mutual respect and encourage students to get to know each other.
- After listing and tabulating the qualities of a good friend in Lesson 4, teachers can ask students to think about what it looks like to display that quality. Students can draw a picture of what it looks like to have or display one of the qualities discussed.
- Teachers can also enter student responses for friendship qualities into a word cloud generator to show an alternative way to represent the most important qualities in a good friend.
The lessons included in this resource have students learn more about their peers, how to conduct interviews and collect data, how to present data, the importance of kindness and empathy, and how to use their new knowledge with other topics and settings. Part of the lessons' focus is on diversity and what we can learn from each other. These lessons are connected to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals by encouraging students to question the world around them and think about how everyone is connected. While climate and the environment are not specifically mentioned, caring for them and access to clean environments and resources are a big part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The concepts learned in these lessons will help students think about others and their needs when talking about climate and environmental problems, solutions, and inequalities related to them. The information presented is accurate, and this resource is recommended for teaching.
