Make a Poetry Book

Ask a Question

  • In this activity students write three short poems about nature and turn them into a small book.

Teaching Tips

  • The resources can be downloaded and used offline or printed.
  • This is a great entry point for young students to explore poetry writing.

Additional Prerequisites

  • Prior knowledge of poetry is helpful for students.
  • It may be difficult for some students to understand the three rhyme schemes: AAAA, AABB, and ABAB.

  • It may be best to read Saving Planet Earthly to your students before they write their poems. This book is a great introduction to climate change.
  • To harness different talents, consider making this a group activity, where some work on the art of the book cover and others get more involved in poem writing.
  • Students can vote on their favorite poems and the best ones could be published in the school's newspaper or other relevant publications.
  • Students can publish their poem books digitally.
  • Teachers of older or more advanced students can use SubjectToClimate's "Pale Blue Dot, We Will Fail You Not": a Poetry Lesson.
Scientist Notes
This activity aims to help foster a connection between students and nature. While it will not specifically educate students on a climate change topic, fostering that connection is important for developing students who understand the importance of climate action. This resource is recommended for students aged 6-8.
